Turning old items into something useful can be a satisfying and eco-friendly project. Recently, while sorting through my fabrics, I came across a lovely floral pique blanket. The country design inspired me to convert it into kitchen towels. These towels are a must-have in every kitchen, and making your own not only adds a personal touch but also cuts down on waste. Let's jump right into this DIY project!
Materials Needed
Before you begin, it’s essential to gather all your materials. Having everything ready will make the process smoother and keep you organized.
Floral pique blanket
Scissors
Measuring tape or ruler
Sewing machine (or needle and thread for hand sewing)
Iron and ironing board
Fabric pins
Preparing the Fabric - How to Transform a Floral Pique Blanket into Practical Kitchen Towels
Your first task in transforming the floral pique blanket into kitchen towels is to prepare the fabric. Lay the blanket flat and give it a quick press with an iron to eliminate any wrinkles.
Next, decide on the size of your kitchen towels. A common size is 40 x 50 cm but feel free to adjust this to suit your needs. Use the measuring tape to mark your desired dimensions with fabric chalk or a fabric pen or pencil.
Carefully cut the pieces . Precision is important, so take your time to ensure accuracy!
Sewing the Towels
With your fabric pieces ready, it's time to start sewing!
If you have a serger sewing machine you can first sew around all the edges of each towel. I fed the towels into the serger one after the other without cutting any of the threads, creating a chain which I cut afterwards.

To ensure your towels are sturdy, then sew a folded hem around each edge. This means folding each side of the fabric about 3 cm inward, pressing it with an iron, then sewing the hem close to the inside edge.
Sew along the edges with a straight stitch, making sure your lines are even. If you're hand sewing, a backstitch can provide a strong seam.
Each towel has to have a loop. If you don't have fabric cotton ribbons to create loops, don't worry you can use strips from the pique blanket to create some.
6 cm wide fabric strips

Serge one edge of the strips, fold in by 2 cm and then fold again, iron and top stitch with a straight stitch.

Cut into 12 cm strips

and attatch on 2 sides to the pique towels to create handles.
Adding Personal Touches
Once your towels are sewn, consider personalizing them.
You could also incorporate embellishments like lace, pockets, or decorative stitching. For example, adding a pocket can create a handy spot for utensils or dish cloths while cooking. Let your imagination run wild and have fun! Upcycling your fabric into one-of-a-kind kitchen linens can truly make a statement.

Final Touches and Care
After sewing, give your towels one last press with the iron. This will smooth out any minor puckering from the sewing process and give them a tidy finish.
These homemade kitchen towels will add country charm to your kitchen while providing practical functionality.
